Enjoy Mayan and Caribbean cultures, stunning beaches and world-class scuba diving on a tailor-made holiday to Belize with Journey Latin America.
A holiday to Belize is unique. In this tiny English-speaking Central American country, you’ll find a cocktail of Creole, British colonial, Spanish and indigenous cultures. Holidays in Belize allow you to easily experience both wildlife of the jungle and marine life and beaches of the Caribbean within a short distance. Belize is only a little larger than Wales, making it very easy to sample the country’s natural and cultural attractions in a short space of time.
Your bespoke Belize holiday awaits
The coast beyond Belize City is unmistakably Caribbean: silky white sand beaches and coral atolls, swaying palm trees, turquoise seas, laidback people, pulsating reggae rhythms and rum punch on islands such as Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker. Belize has the world’s second-largest barrier reef and the underwater world here is a theatre of exotic fish and marine species living among the coral. Scuba-diving highlights include the famous Great Blue Hole, a large marine sinkhole near the centre of Lighthouse Reef.
Beyond the coast in the backcountry, there are forested highlands such as the beautiful Mountain Pine Ridge and verdant jungle around Chaa Creek. Exploring rivers, mysterious caves and riding trails are a must on a holiday to Belize. Wildlife is abundant throughout the country, with hundreds of species of birds and even watchful jaguars inhabiting the rainforest. Belize also has lots of fascinating Mayan archaeological sites, such as Xunantunich and Lamanai, formerly concealed in dense jungle.

When to visit
Compact and bijou, English-speaking Belize is simultaneously both a lively and laid-back place to visit. The best weather is generally from December-May, when it is mostly dry with temperatures of around 30°C. In the Cayo District and on the cayes, you can expect warm sunny days, while the tropical rainforest areas are hot and sultry all year.
A guide to the seasons
June-November is the rainy season, but until early August, rain falls mostly in the afternoon or evening, meaning that you can still travel fairly comfortably. As the season progresses, humidity increases, and there is a low risk of tropical storms.
For wildlife-watching, you can visit year round, but to snorkel with whale sharks in Placencia, the best time to visit is March-June, while turtle-viewing takes place in May-October. If lobster is your thing, then lobster season runs from July through February, with lively Lobsterfest celebrations in San Pedro, Placencia and Caye Caulker marking the opening in early July. For chocolate lovers, Belize’s annual Chocolate Festival takes place in Punta Gorda in May.
Before Lent each year, Belize comes alive for Carnival with vibrant celebrations throughout the country, but particularly in San Pedro. Belize Independence Day is celebrated with gusto on 21 September with parades, processions and parties.
