Overview & Highlights

This trail-blazing holiday follows a unique itinerary through the three Guianas. The remoteness and the nature of the wilderness terrain makes it a route difficult to negotiate independently, so travelling with a small escorted group is the ideal way to make progress across the borders and visit off the beaten track, extraordinary places.

This is a trip which emphatically goes off the beaten track, taking in some of the rarely-visited highlights of Suriname and the Guianas. You won’t find a group tour like this offered by anyone else: the logistics of researching and organising such a trip are daunting but as South America experts we relished the challenge. You'll scramble through dense jungle; surround yourself with wildlife in a rainforest canopy and drive through sweeping savannah punctuated by ancient sandstone plateaux.

You’ll stay in sweltering frontier settlements; visit the French space station and an old penal colony; take boat rides down jungle-fringed rivers and lap up the atmosphere of colonial towns and brash, bold capital cities. You'll have to be prepared for delays, for things not going quite to plan, but you'll be rewarded by an unforgettable trip.

What our clients say

  • Most memorable experiences: “Kaieteur Falls. Angel Falls. Both a wonderful experience. The holiday was described accurately, and your staff were always extremely helpful. I am pleased to have done it and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed it as did I.”

    PJC, Swindon
  • "I have many great memories, but for me going to sleep and then waking up to the sounds of the rain forest both at Rock View Lodge and Atta Rainforest Lodge was magical. Also, taking a shower under a starlit sky at Atta was wonderful! A continuous joy was the friendliness of all the local people we encountered on our journey. They seemed to be genuinely pleased that we had chosen to visit their countries."
"The trip lived up to my expectations. It's a great opportunity to follow a less travelled path through three completely different, but fascinating countries - Guyana, Suriname and Guyane (French Guiana) - and to experience beautiful scenery, remote locations and vibrant cities (especially Georgetown, which I loved). Well done JLA for organising this tour".

    JB, London
  • Most memorable experience? "Lots - Tour of Caracas, the canoe trip to Angel Falls plus the Falls themselves, the night bus trip to St Elena followed by good facilities to freshen up, Rock View (see above), the canopy walkway, which I surprised myself by taking in my stride (!), the somewhat challenging jungle trip by substandard "minibus" to Georgetown, the canoe and parogue crossings along the coast, the trip to the Iles du Salut and the visit to the Arane Space Station.

I was very happy with the experience, but I suspect that this was one of your more unusual trips, as practically all the places we visited were not usual tourist areas. But I got all I could realistically expect from such a tour."

    ET, Huddersfield
  • Highlights? "Where to start? Angel Falls, Kaieteur Falls, the Iles de Salut, sleeping in a hammock, flying in small planes - just loved everything. The range of hotels from very high quality to pretty grotty was what we expected. The trip was exactly as described = we loved every minute!

This is our third trip - Cuba in 2000, Central America in 2009 and this one. I think the general feeling about JLA is that it is slightly more expensive than other companies offering small group tours but I think this reflects the effort which goes into providing travel experience which, in all three cases, has been both enjoyable and memorable."

    PS, Bolton
  • Most memorable experience: “Many on this journey, however main ones include :- Both the optional visits / flights - over Angel Falls & day excursion /flight to Kaieteur Falls . Time at Rock View Lodge & seeing the Coq of the Roq in the forest on the journey to Atta Lodge. The catamaran visit to Iles du Salut. Also enjoyed the atmosphere while wandering around Paramaribo.”

Jim Ashworth
Jim Ashworth - Product & Marketing

Jim first caught the Latin American travel bug in 2001 when he decided at the last minute to join a friend travelling around Central America – he hasn't looked back since.

The Guiana's remain some of the least explored parts of South America. This tour offers the chance to explore these fascinating countries which can be difficult to navigate on your own whilst accompanied by an expert tour leader and like-minded travellers! A must for those with real wanderlust.
