Snow-draped Andean peaks overlook Santiago, Chile’s huge capital, surrounded by sunlit fertile valleys which produce well-respected wines.

Overview

With a backdrop of snow-draped Andean peaks in a sunny fertile valley, Santiago, Chile’s huge capital lies at the heart of the country. A multi-layered place of contrasting neighbourhoods, there are a plethora of fascinating buildings, authentic eateries and picturesque vineyards to discover on a Santiago holiday.

Santiago's tiny colonial heart displays an often poignant history, offset by the glittering malls, skyscrapers and shady boulevards of a modern economy. Interspersed are European-style centres for shopping and eating out such as Italianate Bellavista and newly vibrant localities such as trendy Lastarria. The surrounding Mediterranean landscape is the perfect setting for vineyards and wineries producing well-respected Chilean wines.

Where to go when - our guide to Santiago and the vineyards

Santiago

The weather in Santiago and the vineyards is wide and varied

Situated in the heart of the country, Santiago and the surrounding fertile vineyards can be enjoyed at any time of year, though the fluctuating weather conditions of the region may affect which time suits you best. December - February are the hottest summer months, when the capital empties out a little. You’ll enjoy glorious sunny days and experience the Santiago a Mil theatre and performing arts festival in January. For traditional music, grape stomping and wine tasting, don’t miss the Vendimias harvest festivals from February - May in the vineyards. Winter sports enthusiasts would do well to visit in June - August, to catch the ski season in Valle Nevado and whizz down the dazzling snowy mountain ranges of the Andes.
