Belize: Maya mountains and jungle

Visit Us

The unspoilt interior of Belize harbours some of Central America’s loveliest landscapes and a host of little-visited Mayan sites. In the north, wildlife sanctuaries rub shoulders with sugar cane fields, and recently uncovered Mayan cities poke their head above the canopy of dense jungle. The river banks from the Mennonite village of Shipyard are decorated with tangled bromeliads hanging from tropical trees. Nearby are the Mayan ruins of Lamanai with almost 700 structures.

West towards Guatemala, in the Cayo District, the Macal River offers a water-borne way to explore the forest scenery; and the jagged peaks and gorges of ancient Mountain Pine Ridge are just begging to be explored.

Explore the huge Mayan site at Caracol, a jungle-swamped ruined city in western Belize. 150,000 people once lived here. Still under excavation, it may be judged to have been bigger even than Tikal in neighbouring Guatemala

For a bit of fun and adventure, head out in a canoe or go tubing along the River Macal, spotting birds flitting in and out of the jungle-cladriverbanks banks and huge lazy Iguanas sunbathing in the branches.

Base yourself at one of the wildlife and activity lodges in Northern Belize. If you choose Lamanai (close to the ruined Mayan city) or Chan Chich, you might even be one of the lucky few to see spot a jaguar. Even if you don't, there are plenty of other exotic species to be seen.

What our experts say

One of the real highlights of this area is a visit to the ATM caves, set in the foothills of the Mayan Mountains, which are as mystical as they are beautiful. Be prepared to get wet as you swim through the cave entrance to an underground wonderland of sparkling stalactites. The real excitement comes as you climb into a second chamber, a Mayan burial site, where the calcified remains of ancient skeletons (perhaps sacrificial victims) still remain.
