The sprawling ice fields of Los Glaciares National Park are a frozen wilderness, from which flow 13 enormous glaciers into the lakes Argentino and Viedma.

Overview

The vast ice fields in Los Glaciares National Park, southern Patagonia, are a primeval wilderness from which flow 13 huge glaciers into the waters of lakes Viedma and Argentino. Visitors can only see a small part of it, from bases which are surprisingly accessible, but get a real sense of the remoteness of this unpopulated region.  The emerald beech forest and the wind-strafed steppes framing the ice add to the landscape’s beauty. El Calafate is a small lakeside town with tourist facilities which still has a frontier feel. It’s the base for visits to the Perito Moreno, Upsala and Onelli glaciers.

Where to go when - our guide to El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park

Los Glaciares

The weather in El Calafate and Los Glaciares National Park is wide and varied

The sprawling ice fields of Los Glaciares National Park are a frozen wilderness, from which flow 13 enormous glaciers into the lakes Argentino and Viedma. The most dependable weather is during the summer (December - February), though you’ll find there are large crowds at this time. For a quieter trip, visit in the shoulder seasons of autumn or spring, when the weather is often sunny and clear but prone to strong winds. The winter months (June - August) are much colder and snowfall can reduce the accessibility of many routes.
