Overview & Highlights

Combine the famous train ride along the rim and through the gorges of  desert Mexico's Copper Canyon with the beaches of Baja California. This route shows travellers two extremes of Mexico’s natural scenery, from uncharted expanses to picture-perfect beach scenes.

Inland from Mexico's west coast the seemingly fathomless Copper Canyon cuts a swathe through the barren desert crust. You’ll ride world-famous railway traversing this route, with views of some of the continent's most spectacular mountain scenery. There are relentless ravines and gorges, and an infinite variety of landscape and vegetation from snow-dusted peaks smothered in conifers to sub-tropical citrus groves.

Mexico’s Baja California is a finger of desert stretching 1,300km south from California, separated from the Mexican mainland by the Sea of Cortés. The southern tip, with its chalk-white sands and translucent aquamarine seas, attracts visitors from all over the world, especially the US and Europe. But instead of staying at a large beach resort you will be based in the colonial centre of arty San José del Cabo, where there are plenty of outdoor and cultural activities to choose from.

Copper Canyon Railway departure schedules are subject to change, which could result in alterations to the described itinerary.  Our expert Travel Consultants will be able to advise you if this is the case at the time of booking.

Our Expert's Opinion

This itinerary is perfect for those with limited time but still offers the incredible experiences you would expect from a holiday in Mexico. The highlight of this trip is a remarkable train ride through the Copper Canyon. You'll board the world-famous railway and travel through ever-changing landscapes, from wild ravines and deep canyons to snow-dusted peaks and arid deserts. It's definitely one of my favourite train journeys in Latin America!
