The simple and informal Hotel Bocas Town is on the waterfront, about five minutes' drive from the airstrip and a short walk from the island's restaurants, bars and shops. Like many of the buildings in Bocas del Toro, it is constructed from wood and sits right on the water, offering lovely views and the sounds of the ocean to soothe you to sleep at night. Rooms are bright and cheerful and have air-con and private bathrooms. The terrace is built right over the water, with an informal bar ideal for sundowners or a meal with a stunning ocean view.

The service is exceptional and I found the staff to be very welcoming – nothing was too much hassle. It can be hard in Costa Rica to find a hotel of this standard that is right on the beach, so I was very impressed with the location and delighted to walk down to the ocean mere steps away from the pool.
