Visit the ruins of Yaxha

Stop off at a jungle-shrouded Mayan ruin en route between Tikal and Belize.

The lesser-known but accessible ruins of Yaxhá lie halfway between Tikal and the Belize border, making them a rewarding stop on the journey between Guatemala and its easterly neighbour.

Take a guided tour of this Mayan site, on the banks of the lagoon of the same name. Yaxhá dates from the pre-Classic period between 300 and 900 AD, when merchant warriors exerted influence over the site.

Surrounded by tropical forest, the site has an abundance of wildlife including howler monkeys. Temple 216, made up of 9 rising platforms, is the tallest structure, although climbing it is not currently permitted in order to protect the monument.
