Explore Belem’s Amazonian markets

BRA_Belem_DN_free-1

Discover Belem, a regenerating Amazonian city bustling with riverport life, brimming markets and a chaos of river craft.

Possibly one of the most jumbled, lively and atmospheric cities in Brazil, Belem is an unsung masterpiece of authenticity. A dark history of slavery has evolved into a modern-day engine of regeneration. There are fascinating markets to explore in this Amazonian port, beautiful Portuguese architecture in various stages of dilapidation, historic ramparts and a chaotic, tropical vibe which makes it surprisingly likeable.

The colonial centre and docks area with its restored wrought-iron Municipal market, the Ver-o-Peso open air market piled high with fresh tropical fish, vegetables and exotic berries, and the Estação das Docas, - a completely renovated complex of bars and restaurants by the river are all well worth exploring on foot. A highlight is the neo-classical, rubber-boom era Teatro da Paz, an ornate monument not as well known as its sister in Manaus but perhaps even more impressive in its opulence.
