Lake Titicaca is perhaps one of the most spectacular border crossings and one of the best ways to experience it is as part of our small escorted Hummingbird Group Journey.

Straddling the border of Bolivia and Peru, Lake Titicaca is one of South America's most iconic sites. The shimmering cobalt-blue waters of the world’s highest navigable lake (3,812m above sea level), surrounded by steep landscapes that look like giant green monsters rising up from the water is a truly captivating sight and can be enjoyed from a number of perspectives both around and from on the lake itself.

More than just a spectacular natural landscape, the lake is also home to fascinating examples of traditional Inca life that still exist to this day. Not least on the floating Uros Islands where families wear traditional dress and often live their whole lives on the lake. On the hillsides around the lake you will also find some of the best preserved examples of the 'Inca Steps’ farming system.

One of the best ways to experience Lake Titicaca is as part of one of our escorted small group journeys across South America. In the company of like-minded travellers (max. group size 20) and led by an expert guide, you will discover some of the best highlights in the area and learn the history and significance to the ancient Incas of this world-famous landmark.

Our popular Hummingbird Classic Group Journey has departures in most months throughout the year and travels from Rio in Brazil right the way across South America to Lima in Peru, via Argentina and Bolivia. Attractions along the way include the iconic statue of Christ and Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio, the thundering Iguazú Falls, cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, the world’s highest capital La Paz, Lake Titicaca and the magical ‘lost’ Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. Part of our Classic range, the Hummingbird journey includes stays in high-quality accommodation, the famous luxury Puno to Cusco train journey and uses private transportation throughout.

Our Jacana Discovery Group Journey also has departures in most months throughout the year and follows a similar route from Rio to Lima via Paraguay and Bolivia taking in the same great highlights mentioned above. It differs from the Hummingbird; spending less time in Bolivia (skipping its colonial city of Sucre) and as a Discovery journey it stays in mid-range accommodation and takes a couple of comfortable public buses.
