Part of the Angsana Heritage Collection, idyllic Hacienda Xcanatun sits in tropical gardens on the leafy northern fringe of the city of Mérida.

Formerly one of the many henequen (sisal) estates which dotted the Yucatán peninsula centuries ago, the remains of this 18th century former hacienda have been transformed into an exclusive small resort. Facilities are modern and impressive whilst preserving the charm of the historic oche core of property. Around one third of the 50 or so guest suites are part of the original hacienda structure whilst the others were purpose built during the renovation. The result is one of Mérida’s most desirable enclaves, an appealing base from which to combine a few days sightseeing with relaxation. Suites are air-conditioned and decorated in an elegant, unfussy fusion of colonial and Caribbean styles, with high ceilings and antique furniture. Each unit has a terraces and balcony, inviting you to retreat with a book, whilst the pool suites have their own plunge pool. The lovely tropical garden is dotted with small Japanese-style ponds and accommodates an Olympic-size swimming pool, lined with Bali beds. There is also an haute cuisine restaurant, a bar, fitness centre and spa with a comprehensive range of treatments. The centre of the joyous city of Mérida, with its elegant Paseo Montejo and tree-studded plazas filled with cafés and musicians, is 20-25 minutes by taxi.
