Punta del Este is South America’s most glamorous and cosmopolitan beach resort. Perfect as a base to explore the sand dunes of Cabo Polonio and surrounding coastline, during the summer season it is very busy with holiday-makers so plan ahead. Just 40 minutes’ drive away is the sleepier but no less vibrant former fishing village of José Ignacio which also has cutting edge boutique hotels and art galleries but without the crowds.
