Although not actually a treehouse, this lovely small hotel is arranged around a profusion of tropical vegetation and creeping tree roots lending the impression of a natural oasis in the heart of Merida.

The owner’s impeccable taste and attention to detail has created a perfect blend of its frontispiece – a heritage casona or townhouse – and the contemporary Mexican style and design of the guest rooms which occupy the gardens.

Hammocks are slung between the porticos, and a shady, tiled patio invites guests to linger over breakfast or relax with a drink from the elegant little bar. The slender, elongated pool which meanders its way between the vegetation is more of a decorative feature but will certainly be welcome for a cool off.

With just 15 or so rooms, Treehouse feels personal too. While not large, each is simply and beautifully decorated, with sleek wooden furnishings, feature arts and crafts and tiled floors. King rooms have more privacy on the upper level, while Queen rooms are on the ground floor have easier access to the garden.

Although only adults are accepted at Treehouse, families with children are welcomed at its sister property a few doors down.

Under the same ownership, there’s an excellent café nearby which prides itself on its responsible sourcing of coffee from Mexican producers. The full range of Mérida’s increasingly exciting culinary scene is also within a 10-minute walk.
