Sureño’s art-deco style frontage and retro nuances might fool you into thinking you’ve stepped back into 1960s Havana. There’s a relaxed, tropical feel as you cross the open threshold and billowing white voiles into this youthful, urban boutique hotel.

Although it’s a rather compact place, thanks to the semi-open design there’s an inviting, breezy feel once inside, enhanced by the informal welcome extended by the hotel’s team.

At ground level, the lobby La Mata restaurant and bar serves breakfast and offers a Yucatecan menu at main mealtimes. The cool little rooftop terrace attracts a young clientele and is the place for city views, low-key rhythms and golden-hour margaritas (but please take care around the low barriers). Up on top there’s also a small pool for dipping toes, providing some respite from Mérida’s legendary summer heat.

The vintage flavour continues through the 20 or so guest rooms and, although not large, each is presented in tasteful, muted tones and with careful attention to detail. Being an urban property these generally face nearby buildings or have an internal aspect.

Sureño is located 2km north of Mérida’s main plaza grande and if you’re walking it’s a straight line all the way.
