A barefoot-chic hotel which spills out onto the sands, in our opinion Casa Las Tortugas has the best location on Holbox. It’s the closest hotel to Holbox town yet it feels like an oasis as soon as you cross the threshold.

The 30 or so air-conditioned guest rooms and suites are housed within thatched 2-4 storey cabañas tightly clustered around the inviting swimming pool or perched on the sands. These are painted in dazzling white, lifted by bold tropical colours here and there, and finished with chunky wooden pillars made of tree trunks. Interiors are equally appealing, each guest room being simply and tastefully appointed in barefoot-chic style. Outside stairways wind their way to the uppermost levels where the most premium categories have their own plunge pools. Whichever room or suite you’re in, you’re generally only a stone’s throw from the pool, beach or both.

Pathways meander amidst the palm trees and luxuriant tropical foliage towards the hotel’s beach club where the sands are meticulously raked each day and strewn with sun loungers, giant cushions and day beds. Service is friendly and informal here, encouraging a sociable atmosphere among guests with occasional events in the evenings. Breakfast at Las Tortugas is a lingering pleasure, with tables set out directly on the sands beneath the palms. The hotel also offers a choice of venues for evening meals, with a bias towards Mexican-Mediterranean and Japanese cuisine. Complimentary yoga is offered every morning
