This surfer’s paradise offers wide golden beaches shaded by tropical vegetation and coconut groves.

Overview

The Pacific coast, unlike the sheltered volcanic beaches of the Caribbean, is lashed by foaming Pacific waves, much beloved by surfers.  The wide golden beaches are extremely beautiful, made more so by the shade of the tropical vegetation and coconut groves which tumble down to and fringe them.

Halfway down the coast is Manuel Antonio National Park, a tropical fairy-land of palms, creepers and mangrove swamps, where monkeys scamper down to the sweep of ochre beach at sunset. Hotels and other properties punctuate the hills beyond and sit along the shoreline that leads to the protected national park. There’s also a growing resort complex at Herradura.

Where to go when - our guide to Pacific coast

Manuel Antonio

The weather in Pacific coast is wide and varied

In between the Nicoya and Osa Peninsulas is the central area of the Pacific coast, home to the Manuel Antonio National Park and the most accessible beaches from the interior of the country. Similar to the rest of the western coastline, temperatures here average 29-30°C throughout the year, but are best enjoyed during the dry season from December to April. Humpback whales can be spotted off the shore from August – November.
