Lagarta Lodge is a luxurious, eco-friendly  property on Costa Rica's Nicoya Peninsula offering intimate first class accommodation, spa, gourmet restaurants and fabulous ocean views. 

Set on a bluff overlooking a string of beaches and the Pacific Ocean, Lagarta Lodge has a privileged location on Costa Rica’s undeveloped Nicoya Peninsula and is one of our favourite hotels.

It isn’t a beachfront hotel but there are several beautiful beaches nearby which you can reach on foot or using the complimentary shuttle service. Playa Pelada, a sheltered bay with calm waters, is the closest and a 15-minute walk away. To the south is Playa Guiones, an impressive 7km long and a popular spot for surfing, and to the north is Playa Ostional, a nesting ground for olive ridley sea turtles. If you’re lucky, your stay may coincide with an ‘arribada’ when thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs on the beach.

The property comprises 36 spacious suites each with its own veranda or terrace and decorated in neutral colours to reflect the natural surroundings. Meals are served at the al-fresco Chirriboca restaurant which focusses on local, organically grown produce, and the Gecko Lounge is perfect for a sundowner. Wherever you are in the hotel you will be treated to a breathtaking view.

This is an ideal place to spend several days at the end of your trip, relaxing and enjoying the scenic setting and facilities. There are two infinity pools, a pool with a wet bar, a children’s pool, and a jacuzzi, as well as a spa and yoga studio.

Those feeling more active can explore the adjacent nature reserve, a unique subtropical dry forest, on their own or in the company of a naturalist guide. The walk takes two hours and mornings in particular offer good wildlife-spotting opportunities: howler monkeys, anteaters, coatis, raccoons, iguanas, butterflies, insects, and many species of birds. Other activities such as boat trips on the Rio Nosara and surf lessons can also be booked.
