Rustic camp offering a wilderness experience within the forested grounds of Chaa Creek.

The simple Macal River Tent Camp is situated in an isolated and peaceful location within the grounds of the more luxurious Lodge at Chaa Creek. Set in a clearing and surrounded by lush lowland forest beside the beautiful Macal River, the camp has ten basic cabañas on raised platforms, each with two to four single beds and a small veranda. While mosquito meshing ensures your comfort, the jungle is visible from all sides. Add to this a lack of electricity (lighting is by oil lamp) and you have a real sense of wild camping within the forest. Facilities include a block with communal bathrooms, and a large thatched eating area. A friendly local couple who live on site do all the cooking, encouraging guests to take part in preparing the meals before serving them up by the light of the nightly camp fire.

Excursions can be organised, including canoeing, horse riding and cycling along miles of well-maintained trails, one of which takes you to the nearby ruins of Xunantunich. Along with an abundance of flora, there is plenty of wildlife and particularly birds, with over 250 species recorded in the area.

Our Expert's Opinion

Perfect for those, especially families, looking for a little adventure and experiencing the outdoors of the Belizean jungle. A camp fire is lit in the evenings which makes a lovely atmosphere as there is no electricity.
