Hamanasi is a beautiful property which spills out onto a meticulously swept stretch of sandy beach on the Caribbean coast of Belize.

Its unsophisticated, barefoot appeal is entirely in keeping with Hopkins’s easy charms. With well-cared for accommodation within the forest as well as on the sands, Hamanasi has the feel of an upscale eco-lodge and rustic Caribbean hideaway rolled into one. Staff extend a typically warm Belizean welcome. Accommodation and facilities are in extensive grounds linked with boardwalks through the jungle, and things become very atmospheric in the evenings. The property even has its own small lake in the jungle, which is a good birding spot.

Accommodation is divided into air-conditioned beachfront rooms and suites, and the unique treehouses. Beachfront rooms and suites are in a blue-green Caribbean style building on stilts with views through the trees towards the ocean and just across from the main building which houses the reception, bar and restaurant. Treehouses are reached via the boardwalks through the jungle and raised 4m above the forest floor. The deluxe versions come with more space and their own jacuzzi.

Hamanasi has a dive shop and activity centre on site, as well as a swimming pool.

Low-key Hopkins, although tiny (pop 1,500), is the 3rd largest Garifuna settlement in Belize. Being on the mainland it’s well-positioned for day trips to offshore reefs for snorkelling as well as points inland such as the Cockscomb jaguar preserve.

Hopkins has one of Belize’s better beaches and is under 3 hours from Belize City.
