Freed from the grip of the jungle, the ruins of Xunantunich lie resplendent in a beautiful clearing. Particularly impressive is the steep, imposing face of the pyramid of El Castillo, featuring elaborate friezes and carvings that depict the heavens and the birth of gods.

Cycling is a great way to reach this remote ancient Mayan site, which once served as an important ceremonial centre. In the company of a knowledgeable guide, you’ll cycle through small local villages and idyllic countryside before arriving at the ruins for an informative tour.
