British Airways spreads its wings to Lima, Peru
Here at Journey Latin America we have been waiting for this news for a long time. Ever since we started up in 1980, we have had to disappoint British travellers who prefer direct, non-stop long-haul flights. To Lima: nothing. You have had to change planes in Europe or the USA: in the first case, sometimes having to head off first in the wrong direction in continental Europe, in the second, well, let’s put it this way: transiting through Miami or New York can be a trying experience.
But now, finally, British Airways have opened this window of opportunity. From May 2016 you can fly direct to Lima from Gatwick with British Airways. Flights are scheduled thrice weekly (in high season, twice in low), and the departure and arrival times are user-friendly too: depart the UK at lunchtime and get back home mid afternoon. That’s really good news for families with children, or travellers connecting from and back to other UK airports. Prefer a little more comfort? If you have been put off going to Peru by the thought of many hours crushed into an economy seat, and if you are unwilling to pay for business class, you can choose Premium Economy (World Traveller Plus) on their modern Boeing 777s and enjoy a small cabin, extra leg room and width, and (in the refurbished cabins) a bigger screen on which to watch films and TV programmes.
When you arrive in Lima it will be early or mid-evening local time so you won’t be tempted to connect straight away to somewhere else in Peru: probably a good thing, as you may be tired (it’s a flight of over 12 hours – but several hours shorter than any other airline’s options involving change of ‘plane); you don’t want the stress of possibly missing a connection and it gives you the chance of maybe spending a bit of time in Lima, a much underrated city brimming with monumental colonial buildings, cutting edge restaurants and magnificent museums.
If you are planning a multi-country trip combining Peru with Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo or Buenos Aires, you can travel both ways direct and non-stop with British Airways.
