Whilst most visitors to Nicaragua opt to travel on pre-arranged private transport or public buses, it is possible to hire your own car. We can arrange car hire for you and our Self-drive Nicaragua holiday will give you an idea of the routes we recommend. I should point out that cost of a private vehicle shared between 6 would be very reasonable and there are public buses to most cities, towns and villages in Nicaragua. Intercity buses – most of which are former US school buses – are regular and frequent, albeit often crowded. There are also express vans between major cities that make fewer stops and are sometimes air-conditioned.

I’m afraid we only book hotels or guesthouses but I imagine the Central American Tourism Agency will be able to give you some advice on house rentals. I would add that self-catering apartments are quite common on the coast but inland you may find it better to book colonial-style hotels with adjacent rooms.

If you would like us to send you a quote for a van with a driver and colonial-style hotels, please do send me the dates and the itinerary you had in mind.
