Travel along the Yucatan Puuc Route

Uxmal in The Puuc Route, Mexico

Combine the major Mayan site of Uxmal with visits to the lesser-known ruins that lie along the historic Puuc route.

Visit a historic region littered with an extraordinary number of Mayan sites, each revealing slightly different aspects of life in the ancient society that created them. The Puuc region and the architectural style for which it is known formed part of the Mayan world but has its own distinctive qualities, exhibiting a richly decorative style typified by elaborate carvings and stone mosaics. The long-nosed rain god Chac is well-represented in Puuc religious iconography, in what was a parched and arid part of the country.

After following a winding road past remnants of lesser ruins, reach the ancient city of Labná, where a monumental archway provides a striking focal point. Continue on to Sabil, with its grand, three-tiered palace, before exploring Kabah’s Palace of the Masks.

After your morning’s introduction to Puuc archaeology, visit the pre-eminent example of the architectural style at the magnificent ruins of Uxmal. Here, the imposing Pyramid of the Magician keeps watch over an expansive site encompassing temples, nunneries, ball courts and the vaulted Governor’s Palace.
