Stay in Panama’s incredibly biodiverse cloud forest surrounded by abundant birdlife at this rustic lodge on a 400-acre reserve.

Panama’s cloud forest may not be as famous as neighbouring Costa Rica, but it is no less diverse. At 1,900m above sea level, Mount Totumas Cloud Forest has lodging amid the natural wonders of old growth forest with 30km of self-guided nature trails, hot springs, waterfalls and amazing biodiversity including more than 250 bird species.
Suites in the wooden Bellbird Lodge have the best views of the cloud forest, and although remote, you’ll find the essential comforts of en suite facilities and hot water.

Tucked away in north-west Panama, close to the border with Costa Rica, Mount Totumas also has its own coffee farm of four hectares: expect the freshest coffee over breakfast. Meanwhile the restaurant serves a fusion of international and Latin American and cuisines with ingredients harvested daily from the resort’s gardens and greenhouse.

Mount Totumas borders La Amistad National Park, Central America’s largest preserved highland wilderness, while Los Pozos hot springs are a short hike from the resort. The reserve is built on reforested former pastures with most of the construction material taken from fallen trees or non-native species, and the lodge uses micro hydro-electric generators for much of its energy. The lodge employs local indigenous guides with expert knowledge of the native flora and fauna on excursions into the cloud forest.

What our clients say

  • Panama was far more interesting than what we thought it would be, particularly the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Bio Diversity Museum.

    CY, Heathfield Jan 2020
  • "Bocas del Toro was great fun and frivolous and a great journey there by boat."

    GS, Bushey Jun 2013
  • Each part of my trip had a special moment. I loved both the new and old parts of Panama city, but my highlight there was seeing sloths while walking up…

    TF, Wakefield Jun 2018
  • Most memorable experience: “Tranquillo bay was a cut above everything else.   Staying on Waidup (near Isla Tigre) was also special.”

    MH, Chiswick Dec 2013
  • Top experiences in Panama - going through the canal and exploring Panama City and surrounding area. I was surprised to find that Panama is not just the Canal Zone!

  • Most Memorable Moment?: Too hard to choose one. Panama Canal Transit was a lifelong ambition.
