The wonderful Chaparri Eco-Lodge is a 90 minute drive from Chiclayo on the coast of northern Peru. It is situated in an oasis on the Chaparri Conservation Area, a community-owned natural reserve alive with wildlife.

The pristine area features grassy rolling hills, desert landscapes, imposing rock walls and a myriad of trees and cacti. What’s more, this remote habitat shelters a wild population of threatened species including the Andean spectacled bear, and there is also a rescue centre for bears and other animals confiscated from illegal captivity. You can explore the park from the lodge on a network of trails which provide excellent wildlife and bird-watching opportunities. The lodge has a dozen or so simple en-suite rooms, built from adobe with traditional artworks painted onto the walls. The main building houses the comfortable common areas with hammocks and a dining area with books and binoculars to learn more about the regions wildlife. Meals are created from home-cooked Peruvian fare.

This lodge is a wildlife-lover’s dream- 15 mammal species, 28 reptiles and 283 birds have been recorded in the area. The property is particularly popular with bird watchers: there are plenty of hummingbirds, finches, kingfishers, parakeets and condors. As well as bears, it is common to spot peccaries, deer and foxes, and there are also puma and ocelot in the area. Among reptiles, snakes, lizards and iguanas are found in the area and there is a reptile house on site.
