Hiding behind its unassuming, pastel exterior, the hotel Antelar feels like an oasis in the heart of Mérida.

Hiding behind its unassuming, pastel exterior, the hotel Antelar feels like an oasis in the heart of Mérida.

A typically low-slung Mérida mansion which dates back to the 19th century, this is a very much a contemporary hotel, although one which blends its heritage with modern Mexican design and tones.

The historic core has been transformed into a cool and stylish lobby and café-bar, inviting you to linger over breakfast (or a margarita). Beyond, is a peaceful patio-garden where you can lie in the sun or beneath the arches which are adorned with giant urns and tropical foliage. At its centre is a particularly inviting L-shaped swimming pool, which may well tempt you away from your sightseeing.

With just seven rooms and suites, it feels personal too. Arranged in a row beneath the arches and behind the pool, the standard guest rooms are spacious, with unfussy décor, discreet lighting and little reminders that you are in Yucatán, such as lampshades made of henequén (sisal). The junior suite is also on the ground floor, facing the pool with its own terrace, while the two suites on the upper level have floor-to-ceiling sliding windows leading on to balconies which overlook the gardens.

The city is on your doorstep here: Antelar is within a 5-minute walk of Parque Santa Lucia and just beyond is Mérida’s main plaza.
