One of only a few hotels situated directly behind Holbox’s sandy beach, Villas Flamingos is also, in our opinion, the best on the island.

A 15-minute walk from Holbox town, Villas Flamingos cuts a striking profile from the moment you arrive: the giant reception palapa is intended to resemble a flamingo nest (these birds also visit the island, generally between June and September). The atmosphere is sociable although you should have no trouble finding your own space to relax in the sandy grounds where there are hammocks dotted around. There’s a swimming pool perched above the ocean and 2 other small pools for cooling off.

The 40 or so guest rooms and suites cover a wide range of categories and are distributed in an arrangement of heavily thatched, whitewashed cabanas and cottages set in tropical gardens shaded by coconut palms. Interiors are bright and cheerful, with Mexican marine colours, nautical style nick-nacks and Mexican handicrafts. All have a balcony or terrace, many come with their own hot tub or plunge pool and TVs are shunned. The bi-level Honeymoon Suite has lovely ocean views from the bedroom and terrace on its upper level. Meanwhile the luxurious Palapa Master Suites are a real treat, each with 2 terraces and far-reaching views. The hotel’s restaurant and beach bar offers a delicious Mexican menu including the classics such as seafood tacos, ideal for a lazy lunch in the ocean breeze.
