Set in the highlands, away from Santa Cruz's waterfront crowds, the unique Galápagos Magic Tented Camp has raised safari tents and elevated tree houses with gorgeous views.

The lodge has an open-air seating area, where fresh dinners are prepared, and for a truly unique and even eerie experience, you can have a pre- or post-dinner drink in lava tunnels in the subterranean Lava Lounge.

The simple, but comfortable walk-in double safari tents have their own private bathrooms. The more basic screened tree houses are equipped with a flush toilet and a basin with running water, as well as a small deck and bench. Twin beds are provided and, despite their no-frills camp style décor, there is electricity in all rooms.

Giant tortoises roam here throughout much of the year, and you might see a handful slowly moving through the grounds or dotting the meadow. Galápagos tortoises are probably the best loved creatures of all the endemic species of the archipelago, but they do need a bit of help to flourish. Galápagos Magic has launched an initiative to put aside 12 hectares of its property to create and restore the ideal habitat for tortoises to thrive; planting trees and creating water drinking pools. There’s an interpretive centre dedicated to the tortoises and a defined trail around the reserve for visitors.

  • A couple of days in the Galapagos when we didn't see any other people. Intimacy of swimming with sealions, turtles & being chased in the water by a flightless cormorant!

Our Expert's Opinion

One of my all time best travel memories is of opening the door of my safari tent and being greeted by dozens of giant tortoises roaming around mere feet away. The magic of spending an hour or so in the early morning simply sipping a fresh coffee and watching these amazing creatures at such close quarters cannot be overstated.
