Visit the Yunguilla Community, an inspiring example of more sustainable, community-led tourism set within Ecuador’s cloud forest north of Quito.

Originally supported by the Maquipucuna Foundation, the project was created as an alternative to deforestation, helping families transition from localised logging to conservation and tourism-based livelihoods.

Now in its third generation, the initiative is run almost entirely by the community, with most families playing an active role. Agriculture, cheese-making, jam production and hospitality all contribute to daily life here, with many of the ingredients used, grown or produced locally. This model has created a more self-sufficient economy while improving quality of life and reducing reliance on external resources.

Set within the biodiverse Chocó Andino region, a UNESCO-recognised biosphere reserve, the surrounding landscape is particularly striking. You are immersed in lush cloud forest scenery with sweeping valley views, dense vegetation and an abundance of wildlife. The area is home to a rich variety of bird species, along with mammals such as spectacled bears and a wide range of native flora, making it an important conservation corridor.

During your visit, there will be an opportunity to explore the forest on guided walks and gain insight into everyday community life, from food production to conservation initiatives. The experience includes a traditional lunch prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Your visit not only offers a deeper cultural and environmental connection, but also directly supports the community and its long-term sustainability.

Please note: Visits are usually combined with a stop at the Intinan Museum on transfers between Quito and the Mindo Cloud Forest.
