Simple ranch-style lodge in a beautiful rural setting, surrounded by cattle ranches and fruit plantations.

The secluded ranch-style Sueno Azul Hotel is set in the plains of northern Sarapiquí, surrounded by cattle ranches, fruit plantations and lush rainforest, an hour and a half's drive from San José. Whilst it dedicates a large proportion of its land to environmentally friendly programmes, it also offers a variety of enjoyable excursions (payable locally), such as nature tours, riding, canopying, tubing and botanical garden visits. Scattered amongst the grounds and surrounding area are waterfall-fed pools and natural water slides offering a refreshing and memorable swim.

The hotel has a charming family-run history and very friendly staff. A striking feature is the El Corral restaurant, converted from an old stable, which offers both traditional Costa Rican and international food. Built from wood, the hacienda has an authentic feel; the rooms are basic, clean and spacious with rustic touches.

What our clients say

  • Highlights?: Seeing the Quetzal with Carlos; finding the MotMot on our own at La Quinta; seeing the Eyelash Pit Viper on the Hanging Bridges trip; all of the 5 days with Esteban and Alberto were brilliant (and my husband seeing the Roseate Spoonbill and Jabiru at Palo Verde - I loved the Fiery Aricaris a few feet in front of us at Rio Magnolia). In all we saw 234 species of birds.

    MCB, Stockport
  • So many memorable experiences - flying into Tortuguero, watching turtle hatchlings race to the sea, the boat ride out of Tortuguero, all the animals (including a mummy sloth with baby attached climb down a tree in the middle of a restaurant and then back up again), Monteverde scenery, Tamarindo beach, our son learning to surf, snorkelling in Cahuita and seeing a turtle and a nurse shark, how lovely the Costa Rican people are.

    SM, Chiswick
  • So many - sloths close up, wild monkeys eating coconuts from our hand, finding a snake in Falls resort, zipwiring in Arenal, canoeing to old Costa Rican farmhouse, night walks in Monteverde, whale and dolphin watching on my birthday in Manuel Antonio, birdwatching in Tortuguero, massive iguanas in Mawamba, walking home from dinner in a massive downpour in Manuel Antonio, watching toucans and armadillo in Monteverde.

    JS, Amersham
  • Highlight?: Visit to Tortuguero was exciting and remote. Rancho Margot was our favourite accommodation. It was a privilege to visit this beautiful country.

    MC, Arlesly
  • Highlights:- The friendliness of the people and the wildlife.

    ME
  • The wildlife in Costa Rica is incredible and it is everywhere you go and very immediate. Add to that beautiful scenery and very friendly people and it is a great holiday destination.

Our expert's view

Kathryn Rhodes
Kathryn Rhodes - Travel Expert

Kathryn backpacked across Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru before joining us. She has a degree in Philosophy and French and is a keen netball player.

The sometimes basic decor and facilities of this rustic lodge are nevertheless made up for by its beautiful location and excellent birdwatching opportunities. I had a wonderful day taking a horse out for a ride to nearby waterfalls, swimming in natural pools and whizzing through the jungle canopy on a zipline.
