Santa Juana Lodge
Santa Juana Lodge is a small and family-friendly countryside property inland from the Pacific coast.
This small, family-friendly lodge and working farm is just an hour’s drive inland from Quepos on the Pacific coast, a bumpy ride through palm plantations and up through rolling countryside to the property at 800m above sea level.
There are seven guest rooms, four of which are individual cabins. There are plenty of birds to spot in the foliage around the cabins which have no air-conditioning but well ventilated with screened doors and windows. It's a real away-from-it-all place, there's no Wifi and TVs tend not to receive any programmes.
Design is contemporary: the spacious cabins are beautifully furnished, featuring polished wood. There are lovely views over the emerald hills from the balconies’ hammocks and rocking chairs. Meals are offered featuring traditional Costa Rican fare, including the ubiquitous rice and beans. Some cabins have a small kitchenette. Various activities are on offer such as horse riding, waterfall swimming, coffee and nature tours and visits to sugar-cane plantations.

Highlight: Seeing the wildlife in Costa Rica. There are so many beautiful birds and amazing animals that it's hard not to see them. The guides were exceptional, especially William and Carlos and not only found the wildlife but also told us about other aspects of the countries. I particularly enjoyed having the private tours and we would do that again.JW, Weymouth
Most memorable experiences: "Snorkelling off the island at Corcovado seeing the marine wildlife then returning by boat seeing dolphins and turtles in the sea; Kayaking excursion form Tortuga Lodge (extra cost but worth it) - sitting watching spider monkeys a few feet a way form us drinking juice form the fruit, with caymen in close attendance."DO, Bedford
Highlights?: Very hard to select 1 or 2 things. However would probably say Travelling to and staying at Tortuga Lodge and the excursions into the Jungle (in 3 days we saw over 60 different birds / mammals / reptiles !!!) and also the Zip lining at Arenal - breathtaking and exhilarating - what views and what an adrenalin rush ! ! ...Costa Rica is an amazing country - small, but with so much to offer and so diverse ! Everything was amazing...This is the best family holiday we have ever had. Even our 20 year old daughter, who has travelled extensively, agreed that Costa Rica is wonderfully unique. The itinerary provided by Joirney Latin America provided a varied and interestingly diverse view of the country. Each accommodation was memorable and contributed towards an amazing trip. Thank you.RW, Cheltenham
Highlights “Our overall impression was how lovely all the people were that we met, amazing wildlife and very good food. Our most memorable experience was probably kayaking at Tortuguero although we also did a very good night walk when we were staying at Arenal, and spotted loads of frogs, toads, snakes and spiders.”JP, Newtown
Everything felt "easy" and stress free. The most memorable aspect was driving through fantastic scenery, so much to see!AF, Cardiff
It was all pretty memorable but the view of the Arenal volcano from our boat transfer across the lake sticks in my mind. It was a completely clear day and the volcano was steaming. Also the sleeping toucan on the El Refugio Twilight Tour. Also Rio Perdido was a lovely place for a couple of days relaxation.EW, Newport
Highlights: Bird watching at Tortuguero and snorkelling on the reef in Belize which was simply amazing.GW, Winchester
So many brilliant memories but if we had to pick one it was witnessing the sea turtle lay eggs on beach in Tortugero.PG, Galway
Costa Rica is a stunning country: in terms of its people, who are so warm and welcoming; its ethical basis and its phenomenal wildlife. Snorkelling at Cano Island was truly memorable as was having toucans feet away at La Paloma. We are so pleased we added on a partial transit of The Panamá Canal: the experience was one we shall never forget. The other think to mention is that Kathryn organised the tour exactly the right way round.: we met others who had done it differently and they regretted doing so.JS, Brighton
Highlights?: The drive Ranch Margot round Lake Arenal, staying there, seeing humming birds feeding from flowers a metre from our bungalow veranda, kayaking in the shadow of the amazing volcano.JH, London
