The DoubleTree by Hilton Cariari is a pleasant low-rise hotel set in leafy gardens on the outskirts of San Jose.

Not only is this agreeable hotel handy for visits to the centre of the capital but it is also just 8 km from the international airport, making it a good choice for arrival to and departure from Costa Rica by air.

The two storey building circles a huge heated freeform pool, fringed by tropical plants.  Guest rooms, lining long corridors over the two floors are large and comfortable: décor is not cutting edge but clean and bright with air-conditioning, iron and ironing board, hair-dryer, coffee-maker and TV. There's a semi al-fresco bar and restaurant also with views over the pool. The English=speaking staff are friendly and accommodating. The hotel welcomes business and leisure guests, including families, so, as well as the pool and its sun-loungers, there is an impressive range of facilities including a gym, beauty salon, gift shop, car rental agency, tour desk, laundry, luggage storage, ATM and convenience store.

What our clients say

  • The treks throughout the trip were superb. Excellent guides and the range of wildlife was stunning.

    WRDT, Bakewell
  • Highlight? We did a night hike in Monteverde and saw snakes, sloths, owls.

    SW, London
  • We always ask each other what the highlight was, but always fail.  It was really the variety.  There is really so much to remember.

    JS, Bath
  • A brilliant mixture of hotels. Excellent standard and great service. Beautiful settings and well located.

    LW, NW11
  • Most memorable experience: “Very difficult to be specific but an eclectic selection would include:- Boat trip excursion with excellent guide from Tortuga Lodge; Singer/Musician at Dinner at Arenal Nayara Hotel; Crossing Arenal Lake (clear blue skies and we were the only passengers on the boat) and then scenic drive to Monteverde”

    VB, Sloane Sqaure
  • Highlights?: The drive Ranch Margot round Lake Arenal, staying there, seeing humming birds feeding from flowers a metre from our bungalow veranda, kayaking in the shadow of the amazing volcano.

Kathryn
Kathryn Rhodes - Travel Expert

Kathryn backpacked across Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru before joining us. She has a degree in Philosophy and French and is a keen netball player.

It seemed that barely an hour had passed from getting off my flight to relaxing in the hotel’s enormous pool – such is the benefit of being so close to the airport and not having to contend with San Jose’s traffic to get into the city. The hotel offers everything you’d expect from Doubletree – attentive service, spacious rooms and plenty of facilities.
