Salvador, Lencois and the beaches of Bahia: Go walking in the Chapada Diamantina

Go walking in the Chapada Diamantina

Difficulty rating:

The table-top mountain, canyon-scarred landscapes of Chapada Diamantina constitute quintessential walking country. You can venture out from the principal bases for hiking, Lençois and Capao, for a couple of hours’ stroll in the stunning countryside but to do justice to the potential you’ll need to take a guide and set off for a half or full day hike.

We particularly recommend two of these treks: the walk to Sossego waterfall (acknowledged as one of Brazil’s best) and the hike through Fumaça canyon to Cachoeira da Fumaça, at 340m from top to foaming bottom the second tallest cataract in the country. The first takes you walking along the rocky riverbed of a valley framed by towering cliffs embellished with ferns and orchids, while that latter has you climbing to a viewpoint above the falls where you gaze down a full 300m to the valley below.

There are plenty of other options, some taking several days: all are adventurous, exhilarating, challenging and very beautiful. Well prepared with good walking boots, swimwear and your camera, you’ll have a very satisfying experience in the care of your expert guide.
