Discover the Chapada dos Veadeiros
The Chapada dos Veadeiros, 3 hours north of Brasilia, is uniquely important in protecting high-altitude cerrado landscape and flora. Now recognised as a World Natural Heritage site by UNESCO, the region is a sanctuary for a distinct biome considered to be the richest of all the world´s savannas. This is off the beaten track Brazil where you can expect open skies, sweeping grasslands and tangled forests of endemic plants.
The Chapada’s quartz-rich geology has attracted no shortage of extra-terrestrial theorising and a quirky blend of residents to the region’s frontier-like settlements. The flypasts of blue and yellow macaws overhead at dawn and dusk add a touch of magic to the otherworldly atmosphere here. Although very few overseas visitors have discovered Chapada dos Veadeiros, it is well-known among Brazilians who love to cool off in the rivers and beautiful crystalline waterfalls.
Based at a hospitable Brazilian pousada, during a typical 3-day visit you will have the chance to explore the National Park at the heart of the region, hiking along easy to moderate trails through lovely landscapes to cool off at scenic cascades. With swimming and walking in mind the best time for a visit is between April and October.
