Ray Caye Island Resort
Tiny Ray Caye could be your textbook Caribbean-island escape, 30km off Placencia and close to the Belize barrier reef.
The island is so small you’ve got it covered in a matter of minutes, but that’s exactly the idea: barefoot relaxation and a taste of the Caribbean away from mainland pressures. You’ll awaken (or nod off to) the sound of gently lapping shores, seabirds and the wind in the trees. Palm trees dot the island which is ringed with coral sand. There is plenty of space to relax, and although much of the shore is bolstered with rocks to combat erosion it’s possible to swim and snorkel off the island’s southern dock.
Most of Ray Caye’s dozen or so rooms and suites offer either full or partial ocean views. Being in the centre of the island, the lead-in rooms have balconies and a garden view, although being on the first floor you may catch a glimpse of the ocean through the trees in some rooms. Meanwhile, the spacious Oceanfront Cabanas have their own private deck. The island’s Lionfish Bar Grill offers a menu which changes regularly and includes traditional Belizean classics as well as international dishes, including seafood and vegetarian options. Ray Caye’s onsite dive centre which can set up one-off drops as well as courses.
