flower festival medellin

Inspired by our Inca Garden that we will be displaying at RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show we started to think about flower-related holidays all over Latin America. So, here’s Journey Latin America’s favourite holidays with a floral twist!

1. Cactus in Argentina

Mount Fitz Roy in Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia

En route to Salta by Cachi you’ll find National Park, Los Cardones is peppered with hundreds of giant cactus – a unique view that’s a memorable part of any holiday to Argentina. You’ll begin to see these hardy plants in a whole different light and angle as there’s fantastic trekking in this area too!

2. Cloud Forest, Costa Rica

With the largest number of orchid varieties in the world a guided hike into Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is an amazing opportunity to get close to wildlife, nature and flowers. Frequently found swathed in mist, which encourages the growth of mosses and ferns and creates a magical fairyland feel, this protected park in Costa Rica is where the many indigenous mammals and birds can thrive undisturbed, and observation of many of these is more or less guaranteed.

3. Flower Festival, Colombia

Villa de Leyva

Our Colombian-born travel consultant Lina Fuller knows all about this 10- day festival that takes place in the first week of August in Medellin, Colombia. During the festival the whole city blooms; streets, balconies, terraces and gardens are flooded with flowers. There are also horse parades, live music including the national ‘trova’ songs, classic car parades and exhibitions of orchids, birds and flowers at the botanical gardens. You should also visit the Sanalejo handicraft market and the vibrant street parties which take place in every neighbourhood of the city come highly recommended! We have a great itnerary, so that you can time your holiday in Colombia with this vibrant festival.

4. Orchids in Peru

Machu PIcchu

Boasting the world’s largest private collection of indigenous orchids this sought-after destination offers more than its location: sitting on the doorstep of the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. One of the most magical natural environments in Peru, you can discover a working tea plantation, and the world’s largest private collection of indigenous orchids, open to the public. The Waqnaki orchid promises to engage and enchant if along with all of the tales and legends surrounding this magical place.

5. Ruta de las Flores, El Salvador

Chris Moss, travel journalist from the Telegraph declared the Ruta de las Flores in his top five attractions in El Salvador. The flowers along this magnificent road bloom from October to February, so in order to take in this floral explosion of colours and scents you should time your holiday in El Salvador within these months. However if you miss the flower season you won’t be disappointed by the scenery of mountains, sugarcane, coffee plantations and volcanoes which are year-round vistas for whatever the time of year.
