For luxury accommodation, we can suggest the Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa, located in Punta Maroma, 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen. Originally a coconut plantation, this stylish hotel belongs to the exclusive Belmond portfolio, formerly known as Orient Express. Another equally exclusive property is Esencia, a small luxury resort set on Playa Xpu-Ha, a beautiful 3km broad stretch of powdery sand beach on Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

A notch down from these two, but equally delightful, is the Ana y Jose, a small, family-run hotel located 15 minutes’ walk from the centre of Tulum – popular with families and couples alike.
