Bocas del Mar Hotel is a 20-minute drive from the highway, set on a hilltop in a secluded natural environment with pretty coves and beaches easily accessible.
The hotel is smart and prides itself on attentive service. The cheerful, Mediterranean chalet-style bungalows have floor-to-ceiling windows, a fresh, airy décor, with views of the tropical gardens.
The pools are particularly seductive, but if you can drag yourself away from your lounger there are plenty of activities on offer, such as kayaking, horse-riding, bird-watching and nature hikes. There’s a private dock to facilitate beach-hopping among the islands and leisurely, daily scheduled trips in the hotel’s own vessel include fishing, snorkelling, diving and whale watching (Jul-Nov).
