With its coastal setting backed by Atlantic rainforest, this property has the feel of a secluded beach house.

Trancoso is in the balmy state of Bahia, just 2 hours’ flight north of Rio and a 90-minute road journey. It’s well worth the journey for year-round tropical warmth, and golden beaches. Pousada Tutabel sits on the edge of Itapororoca Beach, on the quiet outskirts of town. It’s a 15-minute drive to Trancoso’s famous Quadrado of colourful historic houses, restaurants, bars and boutiques.

This is a place to slumber to the calming sounds of the ocean in one of 16 comfortable, spacious suites, which have wood furnishings, large windows and some have private or shared balconies. There’s also a standalone villa with 2 double bedrooms and a private pool.

Tutabel offers plenty of activities to keep guests busy with a games room, fitness area, football pitch, beach tennis, heated swimming pool and children’s play area, while paddleboarding, snorkelling and watersports are available at the beach. There’s also a spa and sauna for unwinding, and the restaurant serves farm-to-table cuisine.

Hiking and birdwatching excursions are available in the surrounding protected rainforest. In fact, Tutabel sits close to the Rio do Brasil RPPN environmental conservation area which belongs to the owners and protects almost 1,000 ha of native forest. The pousada organises free visits to the reserve local students to help foster a closer understanding of the need to protect Brazil’s Tabuleiro, or lowland Atlantic forest.
