What is your favourite...
Place
Colombia’s north coast, particularly Tayrona National Park. What makes this region so special is its unique combination of jungle, dramatic mountains and stunning Caribbean beaches, creating some of the most spectacular scenery I have encountered during my travels.
Hiking through Tayrona National Park to reach its remote beaches was an unforgettable experience. The trails wind through dense rainforest, past rivers and waterfalls, with opportunities to spot wildlife including monkeys and colourful tropical birds. We could even hear howler monkeys calling in the distance as we walked through the rainforest, which made the whole experience feel even more wild and remote. The hike itself was incredible, and arriving at one of the quieter beaches at the end made it even more memorable. With crystal-clear water, a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful natural surroundings, it was the perfect place to relax after a day on the trail.
If you visit, I recommend exploring both the jungle paths and the coastline to fully appreciate everything the park has to offer. Staying within or close to the park is also a great way to make the most of your time there, as one of my favourite memories was waking up to the sounds of the jungle coming to life at sunrise.
Excursion
One of the most unforgettable excursions I experienced in Latin America was the four-day journey from the Atacama Desert in Chile to the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia. Travelling across the remote Altiplano, every day brought a completely different landscape, from geyser fields early in the morning to vast desert plains and colourful lagoons. One highlight along the way was Laguna Colorada, a striking red lake dotted with flamingos, which felt surreal against the dramatic backdrop of the Andes.
Reaching the Salar de Uyuni was the highlight. Watching the sunset across the salt flats was incredible. A thin layer of water had settled on the surface, creating a perfect mirror like effect that reflected the sky so clearly. As the sun began to set, the colours reflected across the flats, creating a peaceful and unforgettable atmosphere.
Accommodation
The accommodation I experienced on Lake Atitlán in Guatemala was truly special. The boutique properties I stayed in had a warm, homely atmosphere and provided a fantastic opportunity to connect with both local people and fellow travellers. From my doorstep, I could enjoy incredible views of the lake’s volcanoes, go paddle boarding at sunrise, or take a refreshing swim in the clear water. Breakfast on a terrace overlooking the lake was always a highlight, and watching the changing light over the water throughout the day was spectacular. What made these stays especially memorable was the feeling of being completely immersed in nature. Spending each day surrounded by the lake and its volcanoes, enjoying life outdoors, and ending the evening watching the sun set behind the mountains made Lake Atitlán a place I’ll never forget.
Top travel tip
Don’t be afraid to step away from the main tourist trail. While the iconic sights are popular for a reason, some of the most rewarding travel experiences can be found in lesser-known places. Whether it’s a quiet beach, a local market or a hidden viewpoint, those unexpected discoveries often leave the biggest impression.
Top packing tip
Pack light and choose clothing that can be mixed and matched for different climates and activities as the weather in Latin America can be unpredictable. From chilly mornings in the mountains to hot afternoons on the beach or in the jungle, having layers you can easily adapt keeps you comfortable and ready for anything. This makes travelling easier, whether you are hiking, exploring towns, or just relaxing by the water.
