Where have you been?

Falkland Islands

Have you been before?

No

How did you get there?

Flew London via Sao Paulo to Santiago. Overnight in Santiago, flew from Punta Arenas. All flights with LAN.

How long were you there?

8 days/7 nights.

General route?

Port Stanley and three islands.

Which was your favourite…

Place: Bleaker Island.

Lodge: (Accommodation is like B&Bs) Lodge on Bleaker Island.

Excursion: Guided driving excursion on Pebble Island. Fantastic guide brought the history to life with a personal touch. Pebble Island is significant as it is where the first land fight took place at the beginning of the Falklands War.

Appeals to which type of traveller/client?

Wildlife enthusiasts, particularly those into their birds.

Key items to pack/take with you?

A windproof jacket and something to cover your face with to protect against the wind.

Any good food, drinks, restaurants or bars recommendations?

Few bars and restaurants, but the food in the lodges is hearty, delicious and home-cooked.

Room for improvement?

To really get under the skin of the Falklands, you’d have to stay longer (up a week) and visit more islands.

Carcass Island

How would you summarise/sum up your trip in a sentence?

I was completely struck and amazed by the place and have come away with a new appreciation of birds!

What is life like on the Falklands Islands?

Exploring the Falklands Islands feels as though you’ve stepped back in time, life is calm and easy. No one  locks their houses or cars, there is no crime it is quite a surreal experience.

Was it what you expected?

No, it completely excelled all expectations. I wasn’t prepared for the warmth and friendliness of the people and for the Islands to be such a contrast to the rest of Latin America – a truly fascinating place.
