When to visit The Venezuelan Llanos
Wildlife viewing in Los Llanos varies significantly depending on water levels and seasonal conditions. Heavy rains transform much of the region into a vast floodplain. Wildlife remains abundant, while landscapes become lush and vibrant, offering a different but equally rewarding experience. Each season has its advantages, which means Los Llanos can be enjoyed throughout the year depending on whether your priority is photography, birdwatching or general wildlife viewing.
By December, the llanos have fully transitioned into the dry season, with clearer skies and some cool breezes which makes the warm temperatures more pleasant. With very little rain, the ground grows parched and wildlife congregates at the limited watering holes, making them easier to spot. If you still wish to explore by boat, visit early on in this season when the water levels have dropped a little but not dried up.
95% of precipitation falls during these months, flooding the grassy plains. It is more difficult to navigate the submerged lowlands, although you can explore by boat. The climate is very hot and can feel uncomfortable with high humidity.

- When To Go
This is a tropical region. The wet season extends from May-Nov, when it is extremely hot and humid. The dry season, Dec-Apr, has clear skies and breezes mitigate the heat. Travel through the llanos is very difficult in the wet season as much of the lowland is submerged. The best period is probably at the end of the rains, when it is less humid, the water levels have dropped but you can explore by boat.

- Getting Local Currency
Bolívar Fuerte. Banks will offer advances on a credit card. Money exchange offices and many hotels will happily buy US dollars cash (very few accept euros or sterling and the rate will be poor). Obtain your local currency before heading to the llanos. There are banks and ATMs at Barinas and San Fernando de Apuré but you are unlikely to spend much time, if any, in the towns.
