Portobelo and Caribbean Coast holidays
Portobelo and Caribbean Coast holidays at a glance

Portobelo occupies an outsized place in Panama’s colonial history. It’s hard to imagine now, standing among the quiet waterfront ruins, that this was once a major trading hub – the embarkation point for gold and silver brought overland by mule from Peru and Bolivia, bound for the Spanish Main.
Portobelo fortifications still stand cannon-ready over the bay where Sir Francis Drake came to rest in 1596, a vivid reminder of just how much history this small town has absorbed.

Beyond Portobelo itself, Guna Yala – also known as the San Blas islands – offers a completely different side of Panama colonial history and culture combined.
This string of some 400 islands, only a fraction of them inhabited, is home to the Kuna people, who have maintained self-governing autonomy since the 1920s and continue to live a deeply traditional, communal life from their bamboo and palm-thatched villages. Several islands offer very basic lodgings, and the Kuna welcome respectful visitors keen to experience their remarkable island home.

When to visit Portobelo and Caribbean Coast
The Caribbean coast can be visited throughout the year, although weather conditions vary seasonally. The drier months typically provide the most comfortable conditions for sightseeing and exploring the coastline. Rainfall brings lush tropical landscapes and fewer visitors, while cultural attractions remain accessible. The region’s combination of cultural heritage and coastal scenery makes it rewarding throughout the year.
These are the best months to visit both Portobelo and the San Blas Islands. The weather is balmy at 25 – 30°C, and rainfall from January through to early April is low. In February, various islands of the archipelago celebrate the Tula Revolution with traditional Kuna dances and feasts.

This period sees the highest rainfall of any of the regions, with steady downpours from May – September. The conditions from October – November can be almost monsoon-like. Temperatures remain in the mid to late 20°Cs.
