Private Journey

Manuel Antonio National Park Costa Rica

Manuel Antonio Pacific beach

4 days from £336pp

After an exhilarating holiday zipping around Costa Rica's scenic and wildlife highlights, why not settle back on a golden beach on the country's Pacific coast?  At the Falls Resort you have the choice of simply relaxing or taking part in more active water sports or other land-based pursuits. We suggest you stay for four days to make the most of this idyllic setting.

Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the smallest but best regarded nature parks in Costa Rica. Its setting is lovely - wild, tropical beaches and rocky outcrops backed by rainforest. It has a network of trails where you may see a variety of reptiles, as well as monkey, sloth, armadillo, racoon and over 350 species of birds. Close by, Manuel Antonio beach is also one of the most popular in the country. Over 30 years ago, when we first went there, its pristine white sands were visited only by monkeys and backpackers. Now you'll find tourists from all over the world, especially the USA, but it is still a gorgeous place graced with exquisite natural beauty.

The Falls Resort is situated just a ten minute walk from the coast on a leafy hilltop. You can take the shuttle bus which transports visitors to the beach, the national park and Quepos, the little port a short distance away.  They encourage you to get away from it all here: there is no 'phone in the rooms and wifi is only available in reception and a couple of the deluxe suites. But if you need any information or excursions to be organised, the accommodating staff are only too eager to please. The gardens, overlooked by the guest rooms, are especially lovely, and attract all sorts of wildlife, including monkeys, agoutis and bats. There's a small pool, and a restaurant with decent meals at European prices.

Punta Islita

Punta Islita active beach extension

4 days from £931pp

Punta Islita is a charming and remote hideaway dramatically set on a hilltop surrounded by lush tropical scenery and overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It is a small and intimate resort of just 30 palm-thatched rooms, each boasting spectacular views over the ocean from a private terrace. Some rooms also have a private outdoor Jacuzzi or plunge pool.unta Islita

There is a secluded, crescent-shaped private beach just a ten-minute walk or short shuttle journey away, and a bar with staff on hand to serve refreshments. You could simply spend the day unwinding on the shore or beside the pool, but for the more energetic there are also plenty of activities available in the surrounding rainforest. These include horse riding, mountain-biking, trekking and off-roading in all terrain vehicles, as well as sport fishing and both offshore and deep sea excursions. Complimentary bicycles are available to guests for leisurely exploration.

For a romantic end to an idyllic day at Punta Islita, enjoy a candlelit dinner at the excellent open-air restaurant or at a private table prepared for you on the beach.

Day 1: Following an action-packed week in the canyons and cloud forests of Costa Rica’s volcanic interior, you’ll be driven to Punta Islita, a totally idyllic luxury resort on the Pacific coast Nicoya Peninsula. The journey from Liberia takes 3-4 hours – the first half a paved route but then you embark on a bumpy dirt road; an experience not dissimilar to off-roading in the green (wet) season. You have three nights based here.

Days 2-3: In our opinion it is worth the trip just for the infinity pool alone, overlooking as it does, the ocean and the perfect curve of a fudgy palm-fringed beach bookended by rugged, tightly forested headlands.   The views are mesmeric and the accommodation, with rooms and public areas featuring abundant honey-coloured wood, cool tiles and fabrics in seaside blue and creams, tempts you to while away your time in a hammock.

But there’s loads to do here, with an impressive clutch of supervised activities with sports including golf, horse-riding on the beach, tennis, mountain biking, local hikes, kayaking and surf lessons.  Slightly less energy-consuming are bird-watching and dolphin-spotting tours, cooking sessions and even cocktail-mixing. There are also experiences with a cultural focus, where you visit the local community.

Meals are excellent and you will probably want to eat at the property. : we include only breakfast in the price to give you the flexibility to eat as and when required.

Day 4:  Transfer to Liberia airport for a flight to connect with for your international flight home.

Breakfast included.
