Climb active Cerro Negro volcano

nic08-climb-an-active-volcano-free-rafe

Climb to the top of Cerro Negro volcano, passing crests of lava and two giant craters.

Rising out of the trees, the dark walls of the active volcano of Cerro Negro contrast vividly with the lush green surroundings. The trails approaching the cone soon turn to black lava dunes as you reach the foot of the volcano and begin an easy climb up to its two craters.

From the summit you’ll be able to enjoy astounding views over the volcano range, the plains and highlands of Nicaragua and the Pacific Ocean, before beginning an equally scenic descent across the loose rocks and sand of Cerro Negro’s black slopes – an otherworldly environment. To speed up the journey there’s even the exhilarating option of ‘ash boarding’ down the scree-covered surface.
