Mexico is a big country with a variety of landscapes, climates and traditions to match. The deserts, mountains and jungles have been the stage for a turbulent history. Flick your way through the pages of its story on the ground and you find the vestiges of the Aztec and Mayan empires, with magnificent ruined pyramids and temples on well-ordered archaeological sites, and graceful colonial towns and haciendas, while a timeless indigenous life continues in the villages and markets.

The countryside is stunning too: there’s a spine of rippling barren mountains, studded with armies of cacti, while much of the coastline is enveloped in dripping rainforest. All this is fringed by sugary beaches and aquamarine seas.

But Mexico is a modern country with a robust emerging economy. Its huge capital is one of the world’s greatest cities, and there’s an efficient road and air network linking Mexico’s major attractions.

Our insider tips for Mexico

Culture vultures are spoilt for choice in Mexico City and should plan to stay at least four nights to see the best of the city - Aztec ruins smack bang in the middle of a buzzing colonial centre of magnificent baroque architecture; exquisite pre-Colombian artefacts at the Anthropology museum; Diego Rivera murals that beautifully recount the nation’s eventful history; and bohemian Coyoacán, with its tree-lined cobbled streets, art galleries and Frida Khalo museum. And this is only touching the surface!

Mexico is vast so if short on time then consider a holiday spent entirely in the wonderfully varied Yucatan Peninsula. You can see the finest Mayan pyramids and enjoy leisurely days exploring sleepy colonial villages and swimming in sacred cenote sinkholes. Merida City has fantastic regional cuisine, frequent live music, excellent handicraft markets and nearby lesser known ruins. The palm-fringed white sand beaches are Mexico's best, from chic Tulum to low key Holbox, where you can snorkel with Whale Sharks between June to September !

Chiapas, a stronghold of traditional indigenous lifestyle, is a wonderful place to witness the fascinating mélange of Spanish and indigenous cultures. Based in the refreshingly cool highland town of San Cristobal, a colonial gem, take a morning visit to nearby San Juan Chamula where Tzoltzil Mayan villagers dressed in bright embroidered tunics and shawls kneel in the incense and candle filled 16th century church to worship catholic saint representations of Mayan gods and partake in shamanic healing ceremonies.

The Copper Canyon railway takes you into otherwise virtually inaccessible remote parts of northern Mexico, land of the Tarahumara Indians. The sublime mountain scenery changes according to altitude (up to 2,400m), from snow-dusted peaks smothered in conifers to sub-tropical citrus groves. There are several options, but do overnight at Poasda Barrancas, which literally clings to the canyon's rim! Get up early for a sunrise walk along the precipitous edge before taking the cable car that in some places rises to 450m above the floor of the canyon!

What our experts say

You definitely can't do justice to Mexico in one visit. Where you go (first) will depend on your interests: history and archaeology, jungle wildlife; active sports, Caribbean beaches... I suggest combining Mexico City with the colonial cities of the heartland and the Pacific coast for a beach relax. Another trip takes you to the Mayan ruins of the Yucatán Peninsula and the colonial haciendas; a third on an active holiday to Copper Canyon and Baja California.
