Cuba: Camaguey

Visit Us

The attractive colonial city of Camagüey, historically significant with revolutionary fervour running through its veins, is also renowned for its cultural life, with a highly respected ballet company. The beautiful Spanish core (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and currently being restored) sits in a labyrinth of serpentine streets so built to confuse attackers. There is an 18th century cathedral with an unusual Moorish roof and a cloistered hospital transformed into a hotel. Picturesque Plaza San Juan is graced by the national theatre and paved with original cobbles.

Exploring the city by bicitaxi, trundling along at a leisurely pace, visiting the farmer’s market (Tue-Sat).

Wandering around the Plaza del Carmen admiring the bronze statues depicting everyday life.

Eating at one of the family-run eateries or paladares: we recommend the generous buffet at Paladar 1800 on San Juan de Dios, with antiques and old photographs in the bar.

What our experts say

There's a lot to see and do in Camaguey as I discovered on a recent visit. I suggest you stay two nights and one day take a guided walking tour of the historic city (my tour involved ambling from one square to another where there are colonial churches, a lovely theatre and art galleries) and on the next take a bici (bike) taxi to visit the farmers' market.
