This rugged terrain is carpeted with pristine rainforests whose dense canopies cover caves and creeks, crystal clear swimming holes and waterfalls, and little-visited Mayan ruins.

Overview

Toledo is the country’s southernmost region: its rugged terrain is carpeted with pristine rainforests whose dense canopies cover caves and creeks, crystal clear swimming holes and waterfalls, and little-visited Mayan ruins. On the coastal lowlands lies the small fishing town of Punta Gorda, the region’s capital and launching pad for explorations into this off-the-beaten-track part of Belize.

Toledo’s population, though sparse, is diverse: Mopan and Kekchi Maya, Creole, Garifuna, East Indian, Mennonite and Mestizo communities have all settled here, creating a unique tapestry of culture and heritage that is fascinating to behold. Ancient Maya traditions have been brought forth to the 21st century and the most important mainstay of local industry is still the production of cacao, with Belize’s annual chocolate festival being held here every May.

The weather in Toledo and the south is wide and varied

The southernmost region of Belize, Toledo’s off-the-beaten track rugged terrain is home to pristine rainforests with dense canopies sheltering caves and creeks, crystal clear swimming holes and waterfalls, as well as little-visited Mayan ruins. The seasons follow the rest of the country with a dry period from December to May and a wet season from June to November, however the dense jungle means it is fairly hot and humid all year round. National Garifuna Day is on November 19 bringing traditional dancing, drumming and festivities to the area, particularly Punta Gorda.
