Hidden beneath the forests of central Belize, the Caves Branch River winds its way through a series of immense caverns that played an important role in Maya belief and ceremony. Today, these caves can be explored in a more leisurely fashion, drifting downstream on an inflatable tube as the river disappears beneath the limestone hills.
After a short walk through the rainforest, you’ll enter a fascinating underground world of vast chambers, stalactites and crystal-clear pools. Equipped with a head torch, you’ll float through the darkness while your guide explains the significance of the caves to the Maya, who regarded them as gateways to the underworld of Xibalba. Archaeological remains, ceremonial sites and artefacts discovered within the cave system offer an intriguing insight into the beliefs and customs of this ancient civilisation.
The pace is gentle, allowing plenty of time to appreciate the scale and atmosphere of the caves, while the cool waters provide welcome relief from the tropical heat. Combining natural history, archaeology and a sense of adventure, cave tubing offers a different perspective on Belize from its reefs, beaches and Maya ruins.
