San Telmo Luxury Suites boutique hotel occupies a refurbished mansion in the gritty, bohemian barrio of San Telmo, and its historic façade gives little hint of the avant-garde architectural design to be found inside. Whilst we think it is mid-range rather than luxurious, the hotel's elegance and eye-catching mixture of styles are much in keeping with Buenos Aires' chic, cosmopolitan charm, and the fusion of past and present gives it an extra dimension.
All the guest rooms are split level, affording plenty of space although in common with a lot of older buildings that have been converted to hotels, most are internal facing and a little gloomy inside. Nonetheless the location is excellent, not only for the immediate surroundings – Buenos Aires' oldest and perhaps most atmospheric neighbourhood, the home of tango – but also the fact that the dockside restaurants of fashionable Puerto Madero, not to mention central Buenos Aires and the Plaza de Mayo, are within a leisurely stroll of the hotel. The covered rooftop terrace is a pleasant place to unwind after a busy day's sightseeing. There's a decent continental breakfast and for other meals, there are several good options close by.
